How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during regular hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. You will also learn how to repair complicated electrical components, as well as how to remanufacture engines and rebuild transmissions. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
