FAQ

Are you a mechanic or a technician? Can I do part-time studies?

It is not essential, but it is helpful. Employers prefer applicants who have completed a full-time degree. It shows that you've put the effort in and have done everything possible to succeed.

This doesn't necessarily mean you can't continue to work while studying. Some universities let students complete their coursework in the summer and then continue their studies during the school year. Others allow students to study part-time all year.

What is the difference in a mechanic and an auto technician?

These two jobs are very similar but not identical. An automotive technician maintains cars, while a mechanic repairs them.

A mechanic needs to be able and quick to use their manual dexterity. A mechanic must be able diagnose and fix problems quickly and accurately.

An automotive technician must be more technically proficient than a mechanic. They must be able and able to read blueprints as well as use tools like drills or wrenches.

They must also be able to carry out complex procedures safely. They need to be familiar with various types of engines and electrical system.

They must also be able to understand how various parts interact with each other.

This means that mechanics usually make less money than automotive technicians. Both careers have many options.

Is it worth becoming a mechanic?

This question is dependent on your life goals. If you are looking to make money, then yes. But if meaning and purpose is what you seek, then no.

If you don’t possess any mechanics skills, you won’t be able to do it. It won't make you wealthy. It will not make you famous. It is unlikely that you will be made famous.

You'd have to spend years learning how things work. Then you'd still have to pay someone else to fix your car when it breaks down. This is why most people don’t bother. They find something else to do.

In conclusion, if money is your main goal, you should go ahead. If you are looking for a fulfilling life, however, then stay clear of the mechanics' industry.

How To

How to become an automotive technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must be able to diagnose problems and make repairs quickly, safely, accurately, and efficiently.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These locations can be found online or at your local auto dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. It varies depending on the location of the applicant. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeships last for three years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Classes are offered by most schools during regular business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Many employers prefer to hire Journeymen because they understand the job well.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

There are many factors that affect the salary of an automotive technician, such as where they live, their education and experience. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. Master's degree holders make around $32,000 annually. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
